Vonda Shepard – Songs From Ally McBeal (550 Music Soundtrax)
Shepard is a L.A. cult singer who's hit career pay dirt playing the musical voice of TV's quirkiest new lawyer. She has a strong bluesy folk sound that captures the streetwise but frazzled feel of the series.
The rocking out theme song "Searching My Soul" captures the confusion of being a woman trying to balance work and relationships in the modern world.
Because this album is made up of songs Shepard plays as the bar singer on the show, her original songs get a little bit of a short shift to new versions of 60's pop/rock ditties. The cover versions show good taste in music, if being a little unadventurous – most have been remade at least once in recent years.
There is the romantic confusion of "Hooked On A Feeling," the tormented heartache of "The End Of The World" and the beautiful resignation of "Walk Away Renee."
Songs From Ally McBeal may not be the perfect representation of Shepard's music, but it's a fun listen. (6/98)
