With a catchy debut LP in Leave Me Alone and an infectious garage rock sound that is as fun and poppy as anything in ages, the Spanish quartet Hinds blew away a sold out Washington, D.C., crowd last Thursday. The four women of the Madrid-based outfit give the songs a vast depth of sound and vision. Carlotta Cosials’ guitar is strummed with an exacting precision to reveal each string to the ear. Her voice mixes in with joy and abandon with Ana Perrote’s vocals and guitar. Bassist Ade Martin and drummer Amber Grimbergen punctuate the sonic pops and giggles.

Opening with “Warning with the Curling,” Perrote played a bright green kazoo to contrast with the blue lights of U Street Music Hall. Smiles were abound throughout the evening among the band, playing into the fun of such songs as “Garden.” The vocals blend into a fascinating unintelligible mix at times, reveling in the power of sound over lyric. They are certainly a band ready to break the world open at the seams with fandom and excitement. And it is obvious they are ready to make every show a pure rock party.

Goodbye Honolulu opened. A quartet out of Toronto playing behind their debut record Heavy Gold, they delivered a mix of indie rock that was full of hooks and potential.
