Forces of Nature

Forces of Nature

FORCES OF NATURE  (1999)

Starring Sandra Bullock, Ben Affleck, Maura Tierney, Steve Zahn, Blythe Danner, Ronny Cox, Richard B. Schiff and David Strickland.

Screenplay by Marc Lawrence.

Directed by Bronwen Hughes.

Distributed by Dreamworks Pictures.  106 minutes.   Rated PG-13.

This film is so enjoyable as you watch it that you don’t quite notice that it is somewhat clichéd in many parts.

A 90s update of that old standard, the road movie, Forces of Nature is held together by the good screen chemistry of Sandra Bullock and Ben Affleck.  Bullock plays against type as a free-spirited party girl who tries to loosen up sturdy and slightly stuffy Affleck after meeting cute – in a plane crash, of all things.

The situations are always familiar but never predictable and the ending is much more realistic than you would expect.

There are also very strong supporting turns by Maura Tierney, Ronnie Cox, Blythe Danner and the late David Strickland.

Forces of Nature is much better than it probably has any right to be. (3/99)
