On Sunday night, Megan Davies got to play in her home state of Pennsylvania at Union Transfer in Philadelphia, where she claims that all the “cool” bands while she was in high school got to perform. This time though, it was Megan who was showcasing her talents, mostly performing her original songs off of her EP “Bad Poetry”, which she released in the beginning of August.
Megan opened strong with her single “Walk Away”, which not only showcased her intense vocal range, but her strong energy and that slight edge that she embodies on stage. It always is refreshing to see artists who generally perform covers to take ownership of their original songs, and Megan did just that.
Megan continued to perform songs off of “Bad Poetry,” such as her newest single “Black and White”, as well as a brand-new song “Doesn’t Matter”. The hometown girl finished out her set by bringing up her younger sister Jaclyn, who is often featured on Megan’s YouTube channel, to perform their popular mashup of “Sugar,” “See You Again” and “Love Me Like You Do.” This brought the crowd in to really feel a personal connection to Megan, and also brought her back to her original roots of her covers on social media. Nothing is better than finishing a set with a song that the crowd can sing along to.
Following Megan was fellow YouTube sensation Madilyn Bailey, who came out strong singing one of the covers that made her famous, “Titanium.” With her infectious energy and ability to maneuver the stage with ease, the crowd was up singing and dancing along with right with her. This vibe carried into everyone participating in her song “Congratulations,” which was made even better by everyone’s ability to relate to an impossible break up.
Through the rest of her set, Madilyn continued to woo the crowd with her famous mashups of songs such as Sia’s “Cheap Thrills” and Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You.” The set was finished out with her newest song “No Good,” which has a strong techno feel to it, and I can promise you will be added to my playlist as soon as it is released.
Finally, the show’s headliner came on. Boyce Avenue is comprised of three brothers, took the stage and knocked it out of the ball park performing some of their most popular cover songs, such as “Yellow” by Coldplay and “Everlong” by the Foo Fighters. Through their entire set the audience was mesmerized and singing along to every word of every song. The highlight of the set was when they sang their most popular cover, Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car.” It was the moment the whole audience had been waiting for, and the lead singer Alejandro Manzano’s voice sounded just as clear and pristine as it does on the record.
Between the original songs, and the covers that span throughout every genre, there was something in this show for every person in the audience to enjoy. That is something rare which can’t only be accomplished at just any show, particularly executed with such pure talent.
