As a movie critic, sometimes you just have to go with it, much like the lead character does in this sweet and charming film. She is Anna (Halle Bailey), a former cooking student who gave up on her dreams when her mother suddenly grew ill and died. Therefore Anna has put her life on hold and taken a gig as a professional house sitter – trying on other people’s homes, their clothes, and their lives, just for a bit.
When she loses her job and concurrently her dwelling, she learns through a late-night hookup with an Italian stranger named Matteo at a local hotel bar that he has a villa in Tuscany that is just sitting there empty. And she has a plane ticket to Italy – a gift from her mother before mom got sick.
Sometimes you just have to give in to fate and see where it takes you.
Technically, I know that You, Me and Tuscany is not a great movie. The storyline does not make much sense, the characters are broad caricatures, and nothing overly surprising happens. In fact, it feels like a cheesy Lifetime or Netflix rom com about a plucky, beautiful woman who finds herself and true love in some gorgeous tourist destination somehow got a cinematic release.
But dammit, it was a whole lot of fun. And that is all it ever wanted to be. Truth is, I kind of loved it.
At first, Anna was not planning on breaking into Matteo’s villa. However, due to a local festival, all of the hotel rooms in town are booked. The villa is just there empty. So, who will it hurt? So she moves into the place, finding the key hidden under a plant. Through a series of misunderstandings, the guy’s family finds her there and assumes that she is his new fiancée, and she doesn’t correct them. They are estranged from the guy, so excited that the house is being used again and maybe he’ll come back. Then it turns out that the guy’s adopted brother Michael (Regé-Jean Page) is gorgeous. What’s a girl to do?
Hijinks ensue.
It’s sort of like While You Were Sleeping, but with the added benefit of gorgeous Tuscan scenery and a touch of food porn, and there is nothing wrong with that.
You know what’s going to happen and who will end up with who from the beginning, but that’s okay. And honestly, Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page have some truly combustible chemistry together.
You, Me and Tuscany isn’t going to win any awards or change anyone’s world. However, if you are looking for a fun diversion, it more than fills the bill.
