The Rolling Stones – Bridges To Babylon (Virgin)

The world's oldest rock group still has some tricks up their sleeve. While Bridges To Babylon lands pretty low in the group's body of work compared to Let It Bleed and Exile On Main Street, it does rate a lot of the cheap thrills of the band's best work.

Mick still prances around like a deranged peacock, and Keith, while a little subdued, is still one of the best guitarists in the world.

The problem is too many of these songs sound like other tunes. The first single, "Anybody Seen My Baby" weaves an interesting hoodoo vibe until it slips into a chorus that is lifted wholesale from k.d. lang's "Constant Craving."

"Low Down" knicks the intro from the Stones' own song "Love Is Strong." This doesn't necessarily mean the songs are bad, just overly familiar.

The Stones are no longer the only band that matters, but there is still some life in those old bones. (11/97)
