The middle of Lancaster, PA — right in the heart of Amish country — seems like an odd place to hold a classic rock concert. The concert was held at the American Music Theatre which is surprisingly large given it’s outer appearance. On the way to the venue there are rolling hills and farms, and you may even spot the occasional horse and buggy.
The contrast between the music and the area is astounding, and yet it worked. This stark contrast added another level of intensity to the concert which was full of energy and light. When Styx puts on a show they give it their all, making sure that it is a memorable experience for all.
Styx gained fame with the ever-popular hit ballad “Lady” and has consistently produced mega hits for years afterwards. The band has had some member shakeups over the years, with classic lineup members Tommy Shaw and James “J.Y.” Young adding newer members like Ricky Phillips, Todd Sucherman, and Lawrence Gowan, who have contributed to the tight overall sound as a band.

Styx has focused on touring over the past decade and recently put out a DVD release of live performances of both albums The Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight. They recently did a similar concert in Las Vegas and are expecting to release that DVD soon.
Highlights of the concert included electric live versions of such favorites as “Come Sail Away,” “Too Much Time on My Hands,” “The Grand Illusion” and “Man in the Wilderness.” The band was full of passion as they gave life and meaning to their words. The crowd swayed and danced to the sound, sharing the vibe. One of the highlights was when Lawrence Gowan on the keyboard led a classic rock sing along with the audience. This got everyone in the audience on their feet, a great moment in an already exciting event.
Styx performs each concert with their audiences at the forefront of their minds, giving it their all and putting on an amazing performance that is unique and memorable. It’s no wonder that their talent continues to dazzle people of all generations.
