Rod Stewart & Cheap Trick – PPG Paints Arena – Pittsburgh, PA – August 26, 2023
The 1970’s certainly gave the world a crop of ageless and legendary performers. Such to the point is Sir Rod Stewart, who turned PPG Paints arena in Pittsburgh into a Las Vegas showroom and put on a first-class performance that every performer under 50 should envy.
A line of women doubling as instrumentalists and backup singers took the stage first, kicking off a cover of Robert Palmer’s “Addicted To Love” and giving off vibes of the iconic video. The 77-year-old Stewart joined them in his shimmering suit, and crop of spiky hair, and giving notice this was not to be a rehashing of hits phoned in.
Stewart’s voice and strutting, especially for his age, adds to the charm. The fully built video walls, showing vintage clips as well as closeups live from the stage, enhancing the show without detracting from the main attraction. Stewart went from one song into another with very little banter but encouraged crowd participation on his most well-known hits.
Cheap Trick, another of those ageless and legendary performers, opened the show for Rod Stewart. They flowed through their 13-song set with ease and polish, egged on by a crowd singing along to every word.
Opening with “Magical Mystery Tour,” Cheap Trick weaved their way through standouts like “The Flame,” “I Want You To Want Me,” and “Dream Police” before ending with the perfect ending song “Goodnight.”
