Pylon Reenactment Society – Randy Now’s Man Cave – Bordentown, NJ – June 28, 2018
There is music that when heard in any context can be transformative. It flows through the body and soul with a fluidity and electricity that transcends all other feelings. Pylon is a band that has triggered these sensations in me and many others. The Athens, Georgia band is more obscure than it certainly deserves to be. Now in existence with only the original lead singer, Vanessa Briscoe Hay, they exist as the Pylon Reenactment Society. Their recent mini tour brought them to Randy Now’s Man Cave in Bordentown, New Jersey for a show no one will soon forget.
To hear them unleash the soundscapes of one of the greatest rock songs to ever be crafted (at least in my humble opinion), “Cool,” is to feel the atoms in your body dance in between the sizzling chords and addictive vocals. Briscoe Hay is a brilliant leader, singing to the crowd and being part of the crowd at times, she dances on stage as songs call for it and levitates with the otherworldly moments of such songs as “Danger” and “M-Train.” Of course, nothing could truly replace the remainder of the original line-up of Michael Lachowski, Curtis Crowe and the late Randy Bewley. But the “reenactors” are a fine group of musicians that keep the work alive. Kay Stanton rips and roars on bass while Jason NeSmith shreds on guitar. Joe Rowe’s drums and Damon Denton’s keyboards round out the sound.
With two new songs creeping into the mix. Pylon Reenactment Society are an operation determined to continue. The sound is still ahead of its time, a genre all its own. Their determination and the will of music fandom will help keep their society going and growing so they can again return to the East Coast.
