Peabo Bryson - Unconditional Love (Private Music)

On the first new disk in five years by the soul balladeer extraordinaire, it seems like time has stood still. It is amazing how Unconditional Love feels completely contemporary and yet holds the seductive allure of Bryson's older work.

Bryson's smooth soul love songs still put the wannabes out now to shame. Strong ballads include the fantastic Debbie Gibson duet "Light The World" and the love song to a daughter (or granddaughter?) "I Wish I Could." Other strong tracks include the frisky "On & On" and a duet with longtime friend Roberta Flack of Jim Brickman's "The Gift." And I'm really glad Bryson went back to rediscover the terrific overlooked midtempo romp "Somebody In Your Life" (which Bryson had previously recorded on his 1986 album Quiet Storm.)

R. Kelly and Brandy could learn a thing or two from this album on how to make music for a romantic night at home. (4/99)
