In the thick of primary politics, three of the finest female American singer songwriters are touring with the backing of the League of Women Voters: Patty Griffin, Sara Watkins and Anais Mitchell. This past Saturday at the Jorgensen Auditorium at the University of Connecticut they put on a stunning show under the banner of the Use Your Voice Tour, sharing in singing and backing each other’s works.

Griffin, playing behind her 2015 work Servant of Love and an impressive back catalog, was at the top of her game. Watkins of Nickel Creek and Watkins Family Hour was transcendent with her voice and fiddle. Mitchell stunned with her varied work, including the highly relevant “Why We Build the Wall” from her masterpiece Hadestown, which was one of the many highpoints of the evening.

On their own and together, these three voices are quite a live force. And for a year in which politics is in the air, this type of unifying show for getting out the vote is ever so important.
