Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt – Scottish Rite Auditorium – Collingswood, New Jersey – January 26, 2017

On Thursday, January 26, the Scottish Rite Auditorium in Collingswood resonated with the sounds of two of the premiere voices in music – Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt. Alternating between each other on lead vocals, their acoustic guitars and stories filled the room with musical warmth.

Keeping it apolitical, songs like Hiatt’s “Perfectly Good Guitar” sound like they are from a different era, a different country. That is part of the timeless quality that Lovett and Hiatt can bring to a show. The absurd but certainly profound “If I Had a Boat” is the kind of songcraft Lovett thrives on.

For 26 songs Lovett and Hiatt shared their guitar-picking mastery and lyrical breadth with such ease that you could sense a brotherhood. They opened up to the eager audience with glowing smiles and banter. A duo you should never miss if you have a chance to see them again on their own or apart, Lovett and Hiatt are sublime Americana for now and for always.
