Last Wednesday, one of the greatest musicians of all time graced the stage of The Mann — Dolly Parton. Playing a career-spanning set, Parton dazzled with her showmanship, on full display in every aspect of the brilliant performance.

Playing in support of Pure and Simple, Parton played Philadelphia as part of her first comprehensive U.S. tour in 25 years. The brilliance of her songwriting sparkled on such works as “Jolene” and “Coat of Many Colors.” The latter played into Parton’s storytelling aspect of the show, which connects her to the audience with her common beginnings that eventually led to the immense Parton empire.

The universality of her work and application of it to today as in the past is startling. People danced and sung along to a rousing “9 to 5,” a song that will not stop being prescient anytime soon.  Love for all, especially her fans which she made sure to thank multiple times, blasted through on her first encore classic “I Will Always Love You.” A second encore saw her belt out a heartfelt raw confessional “Hello God,” a soulful sendoff for a phenomenal concert experience.
